Padmavati Row: Suraj Pal Amu Resigns as Haryana BJP Chief Media Coordinator, Calls CM Manohar Lal Khattar Arrogant

Known for his threatening language, Amu had earlier announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore for beheading Padmavati actress Deepika Padukone and its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

New Delhi, Nov 20: An FIR has been filed against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suraj Pal Amu for his derogatory comments against Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Amu on Monday had announced a reward of Rs 10 crore to anyone who beheads Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and its lead actor Deepika Padukone. Addressing a private event, the BJP leader had also threatened to break the legs of actor Ranveer Singh, who is playing the role of  Alauddin Khilji in the movie.

“If you (Ranveer Singh) do not take back your words, we will break your legs [Agar tune apne shabd wapas nahin liye, toh teri taango ko todkar tere haathon mein de dengey),” he had said.

Yesterday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) also wrote to the Haryana DGP seeking action against state BJP Chief Media Coordinator Amu. The NCW urged the DGP to look into the matter and take an appropriate action against Amu in accordance with the law.

Earlier on November 19, the makers of ‘Padmavati’ deferred its release from the slated December 1. In a statement to PTI, a spokesperson of Viacom18 Motion Pictures had said that the makers had taken the decision to voluntarily defer the film’s release.

“Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind ‘Padmavati’, has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017,” the statement said.

Censor Board chief Prasoon Joshi had yesterday slammed the makers for allowing the film to be screened for various media channels before obtaining a certificate from the board. The CBFC had sent the film back to the producer as the application for the certification was incomplete.

However, the film fraternity has come out in support of Bhansali and the team, with many leading artistes calling it an attack on creative freedom.
