India boasts of a rich and lavish history spanning over 5000 years. The land has seen rise and fall of notable dynasties, great emperors, foreign invaders and heroic warriors. Along with great kings, the history of India also saw the presence of equally memorable, queens. One such queen was Rani Padmini, a legendary 13th-14th-century Indian queen. She was first mentioned in Padmavat, an epic poem written in 1540 CE by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Written in the Awadhi language, Padmavat narrated the historic invasion of Chittor by Alauddin Khilji. The Muslim ruler of Delhi Sultanate seized the land ruled by Rawal Ratan Singh with intention of capturing his wife, Rani Padmini. Alauddin became obsessed with Padmavati after hearing of her mesmerizing beauty.
According to Padmavat, Padmini was a princess of the Singhal kingdom (present day, Sri Lanka). She was believed to be the most beautiful face. She became the Queen of Chittor after Ratan Sen, the Rajput ruler of the kingdom got married to her after an adventurous quest. As Rani Padmavati, she epitomized beauty and valour. The writings also described her as an intelligent and determined warrior queen who her husband freed after he was captured by the Delhi Sultanate forces.
The legend of Padmini described in Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem further narrated that when Ratan Singh was in captivity by Delhi forces, a neighbouring Rajput king sent a marriage proposal to Rani Padmini. Devpal of Kumbhalner was enamoured on hearing of Padmavati’s beauty and wanted to make the beautiful queen his consort. After getting freed by his Rajput warriors, Ratan Sen fought with Devpal to avenge this insult. Jayasi’s poem claims the two Rajput kings killing off each other in a single combat. It was then Alauddin Khilji who then ordered his clan to invade Chittor, leading to Rani Padmini and other women taking the decision to immolate themselves.
This version of Malik Muhammad Jayasi remains debated by historians who cite other sources such as Hemratan’s Gora Badal Padmini Chaupai in 1589 CE. According to this version, a Brahmin named Raghav Vyas accidentally interrupted Ratan Sen and Padmavati while they were making love. Fearing the king’s anger, he fled to Delhi where he was received honourably at the court of Alauddin Khilji. From him, the Muslim emperor came to know of the beautiful Padmini women of the Singhal island. In his attempt to get hold of Rani Padmavati, the most beautiful woman, he attacked and besieged Chittor. The beautiful and brave queen took the decision to kill herself by burning to death (practice jauhar) than have her honour compromised.
Apart from Deepika in titular role, Bollywood heartthrobs, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor will be seen in 2017 film Padmavati. Ranveer is essaying the character of Alauddin Khilji while Shahid will be seen in the role of Ratan Sen. The movie also stars Jim Sarbh and Aditi Rao Hydari. Padmavati is expected to hit theatres on December 1 as per the movie posters.
