The other side of TTV Dinakaran: All you didn't know about the AIADMK leader

Some of his close associates describe Dinakaran as an extremely cool-headed and religious person who would patiently listen to people.

The palatial bungalow of TTV Dinakaran built in Kerala-style stands tall in the posh Besant Nagar area of Chennai. Until January, few neighbours and party leaders who wanted favour knew this as one of the power centres of Tamil Nadu.

Few party leaders say that Dinakaran met them in the house if they wanted a favour from Jayalalithaa through Sasikala. Though Jayalalithaa had asked the family not to openly camp at her house, she did listen to Sasikala, said a leader who didn't want to be identified.

Dinakaran is the son of Sasikala's sister Vanithamani. He was favourite of aunt Sasikala because he always knew how to handle things. He was also well educated and knew the AIADMK party structure. When Sasikala passed on the mantle to Dinakaran before going away to jail, this otherwise quiet residential area started buzzing with activity.

DINAKARAN'S HOUSE

Today as he was interrogated in CBI office in the same Besant Nagar, Dinakaran's house wore a deserted look but for the media crowd. Later on when he was brought in to the house for interrogation, the police and few party cadre surrounded the house.

As the camera lens zoomed into the house, few staff got agitated. "We feel media is just focusing too much on this issue unnecessarily. We know that Dinakaran has not even uttered a word to the police but why are they creating so much drama," asked an aide of Dinakaran.

He went onto say that even a very small activity in the house is turned into a big event. For instance Dinakaran and his family turned vegetarians few years ago for religious reasons. Since then a priest has been visiting the house at 9 am everyday. "But some are spreading rumours that he is doing poojas to come out of the case. Where is the question of coming out when there is no case," he asked.

COOL-HEADED

Some of his close associates describe Dinakaran as an extremely cool-headed and religious person who would patiently listen to people. One close aide said Dinakaran is married to his relative Anuradha and both are a loving couple. But after marriage they didn't have children for many years.

"They patiently did many poojas and visited temples." They love their daughter whose name Jaya Harini has been given to the bungalow in Besant Nagar. His wife is supposed to be a dynamic woman who was controlling the party channel Jaya TV until two-and-a-half years ago. She took a break to take care of their daughter.

In fact, Dinakaran was also a favourite of Jayalalithaa. He accompanied Jayalalithaa in many of her campaigns and meetings.

He was made Rajya Sabha MP and also won Lok Sabha seat in 1999 from Periyakulam. But in 2004 he fell out from Jayalalithaa who ordered that he should not come to her Poes Garden residence. However he continued to enjoy clout without making public presence.

In fact after TTV Dhinakaran was made the deputy general secretary he fell out off his uncle M Natarajan who groomed him.

"But to the same uncle he asked not interfere when he became the deputy general secretary. Natarajan broke down and since then has been ill," said a close friend of Natarajan.

Dinakaran's elevation also didn't go down well with Sasikala's brother Dhivakaran who has gone back to their hometown. Even as the Delhi Police is trying to tighten the noose around Dinakaran, his friends say "he has seen many cases in the past and knows how to come out of it. This shouldn't be difficult."

While no senior AIADMK leader was at TTV's place, a loyalist said, "times will change......"
