Kohima, Jul 19 (PTI) In a dramatic political development, the principal opposition in the Nagaland Assembly Naga Peoples Front (NPF) - is all set to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDA), party officials said on Monday.
The NPF, led by the Opposition Leader T R Zeliang has decided to join the ruling PDA. All relevant documents would be submitted during a meeting between the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Opposition Leader Zeliang in the presence of other leaders on Tuesday, confirmed NPF Legislature Party spokesperson Imkong L. Imchen.
The decision was taken on Monday during the Party legislators meeting held in the residence of Zeliang in Dimapur, he said.
However, it was not clear whether it would mean a merger of NPF with either of the ruling PDA partners NDPP and BJP- or merely join the alliance as a separate party.
The ruling PDA which has 34 members, comprises of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party with 20 MLAs, 12 Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs and is supported by 2 Independent MLAs. The 0pposition NPF has 25 MLAs, while one seat is vacant.
Imchen said that the NPF took the decision to be part of the ruling alliance with a view to facilitate an early solution to the Naga peace talks.
In 2015, eight opposition Congress MLAs had merged with NPF making it an opposition-less House.
Mention may be made here that Naga `political issue or peace talks is one of the principal agendas on the election manifesto of every political party in the State in all the elections.
A separate dialogue for a solution between the Central government and Naga negotiating groups has been in progress with NSCN(IM) since 1997 and the two sides have signed a Framework Agreement in August 2015.
The talks were said to have concluded in October 2019.
However in recent times uncertainty over some issues such as allowing the NSCN (IM) the right to tax businesses and inability to make a headway over certain other lingering points has placed the solution process in jeopardy. PTI NBS JRC JRC
