Om Shanti Om, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – 5 Diwali Releases That Became Huge Box Office Hits
When it comes to movie releases, Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights has always been an auspicious and important time for Bollywood. From Baazigar in 1993 to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, the Indian film industry has seen numerous hits during this festive season. While Shah Rukh Khan remains as the only actor who’s had the maximum number of hits during Diwali, this year, we have Aamir Khan‘s Secret Superstar and Rohit Shetty–Ajay Devgn‘s Golmaal Again battling it out at the Box Office, and, even without SRK in the picture it’s set out to be a BO clash to remember. As we await the fate of the two films, let’s take a look down memory lane and list down 5 of Bollywood’s hit films that released during the festival of lights and cashed in big bucks.
In 2004, Veer Zaara, attracted many festive merrymakers by the hundreds to the cinema halls and became one of those uncommon films with a love story set across the Indo-Pak border. Directed by Yash Chopa, the film went on to become a huge hit that year. The music of the film was its major USP. It was based on old and untouched compositions by the late Madan Mohan, that were revised by his son Sanjeev Kohli. The songs are timeless and still continue to contribute to the film’s popularity.
Farah Khan’s 2007 directorial venture starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone was a super hit film thanks to its 70’s kitsch, chartbuster music by Vishal-Shekhar, dramatic and masaledar script and of course SRK. This reincarnation drama also happened to be Deepika’s debut film and the first time when SRK famously displayed his six-pack abs in the song Dard-e-Disco. It went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film yet at that time. On the contrary, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya featuring then debutante actors Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, which released at the same time, miserably failed at the Box Office.
After his 2004 hit film Veer Zaara, Yash Chopra returned to direction for his last film with his favourite, SRK, who gave him some memorable hits in his career namely Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Dil To Pagal Hai, which were both Diwali releases. However, he couldn’t film the final song with Khan and Katrina Kaif in Switzerland, as he succumbed to an illness. The film released during Diwali of 2012, grossing Rs 211 crore worldwide. It was a super hit.
# Krrish 3
Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish 3 was a 2013 Diwali release. It opened to mixed reviews and saw a slow start at the box office in the first three days, however soon picked up thanks to Hrithik and the sci-fi franchise’s loyal fans. The film later on became a huge hit. Starring Hrithik, Priyanka Chopra in the lead and Kangna Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi as the antagonists, the film garnered a lot of attention and entered the 200 crore earning’s club.
Directed by Karan Johar, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan, was a huge hit, entering into the 100 crore club within a week of its release. Like all KJo films, music played a crucial role in its success. The film also came under a lot of scrutiny during the tense political situation in the country after the Uri attack last year, as the film had Pakistani actor Fawad Khan playing a pivotal role. Many wanted the film to not release owing to the ban of actors, from across the border, to act in Indian films. The film released and went on to become a Box Office hit.
