(Eds: Updating with latest figures) Bhubaneswar, Aug 19 (PTI) Odisha's COVID-19 caseload on Wednesday went up to 67,122 with 2,589 people testing positive, while the death toll rose to 372 after 10 patients succumbed to the infection, a health official said.
The state also registered recovery of 1,621 patients taking the total number of people who have been cured of the disease to 46,936, which is 69.92 per cent of the total cases.
The fatality rate, however, remained at 0.55 per cent, the 6th lowest in the country, the official said.
In a bid to reduce the fatality rate to below 0.50 per cent, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, P K Mohapatra, asked the deans and principals of state-run medical colleges to ensure weekly visit of technical teams to different COVID-19 facilities.
'The members of the team may suggest remedial measures for lapses if any, detected during their visits. The team will submit a comprehensive report for each institution/ facilities visited,' Mohapatra said in an order.
The number of active cases in Odisha now stands at 19,761.
Wednesday's spike of 2,589 COVID-19 cases is the second-highest in the state after the detection of 2,924 infections on August 16, the official said.
The fresh cases were reported from 29 of the 30 districts in the state, he said.
Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, registered the highest number of new cases at 466, followed by Ganjam (242), Cuttack (222), Rayagada (211), Sundergarh (155), Balasore (150) and Mayurbhanj (117).
Two ruling BJD leaders Srimayee Mishra and Chinmoy Kumar Sahoo also tested positive for COVID-19.
While Mishra is the chairperson of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation, Sahoo heads Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
Ganjam, Odisha's COVID-19 hotspot, reported four fresh fatalities, followed by two each in Khurda and Sundergarh and one each in Bargarh and Bhadrak districts, he said.
Ganjam alone accounted for 162 of the 372 COVID-19 deaths reported in the state so far, while Khurda is at the second spot with 51 casualties.
Fifty-three COVID-19 patients have died due to other ailments so far, he said.
Odisha has so far tested 10,62,469 samples for COVID- 19, including 53,015 on Tuesday, the official added. PTI AAM NN NN
