Odisha: Mob Ransacks, Torches Police Station in Sambalpur Over Custodial Death of Man
New Delhi, Feb 9: Tension prevails in Odisha’s Sambalpur after an angry mob ransacked and torched a police station in protest against the death of a man in police custody. Locals took to streets on Friday morning and damaged property worth lakhs after news of death of a man, who was arrested on theft charges, spread.
The mob went on rampage pelting stones and burning parked vehicles before the police used force to bring the situation under control. Several protesters were reportedly injured in police lathicharge.
According to reports, locals went berserk after receiving the news of Abinash Munda’s death inside the Ainthapali police station in Sambalpur. Munda, who was arrested on Wednesday on theft charges, was found hanging inside the lockup on Friday.
” There was a custodial death last night. 150-200 people gheraoed the station and burnt it down. Police forces have been deployed, the situation is under control as of now,” Sambalpur SP Sanjeev Arora told the media.

The family members of Munda, a resident of Bhalupali village, accused the cops of beating him mercilessly after arresting him. They said Munda’s body had several injury marks pointing towards torture in police custody.
Meanwhile, more force has been rushed to Sambalpur to control the situation. Top cops are camping in the district to maintain law and order in the district.
