Odisha: Mentally challenged minor girl raped near Jagannath temple

The girl, who is about 10-years-old, was lured by the accused identified as Gurucharan Behera by offering her chocolates.

A mentally challenged minor girl was raped in Baripada of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Friday night. The incident reportedly took place near Jagannath Temple.

Following the incident, the city witnessed protests and agitations in the last 48 hours.

The girl, who is about 10-years-old, was lured by the accused identified as Gurucharan Behera by offering her chocolates.

The incident came to light after the victim came out of the temple.

Sources said, locals rounded up Behera and thrashed him before handing him over to the police.

The girl has been admitted to the PMR Medical College and Hospital and is undergoing treatment. Sources said that she is in a critical condition.

The irate locals reportedly surrounded the police station for hours on Friday night. They even blocked roads and burnt tyres.

Officials have assured all kind of assistance.
