Not Jaya Bachchan, this man is the richest Rajya Sabha candidate


78-year-old Mahendra Prasad or King Mahendra, as he is popularly known, is all set to enter Rajya Sabha for the seventh term. The business tycoon filed his nomination papers from Bihar as a candidate of the Janata Dal (U) for the third time.

The parliamentarian declared assets worth over Rs 4,000 crore in his election affidavit, among which he owns movable assets worth Rs 4,010.21 crore and immovable assets of about Rs 29.1 crore.

Prasad owns two pharma companies, Mapra Laboratories Private Limited and Aristo Pharmaceuticals. He also has term deposits of Rs 2,239 crore with the State Bank of India.

Incidentally, the billionaire doesn’t have any vehicles or insurance policies, according to his election declaration, but does own gold jewellery worth over Rs 41 lakh.

He first entered parliament in 1980 on a Congress ticket but lost the general election in 1984. The Congress elected him to the Rajya Sabha in 1985 and he has been a member of the upper house as a nominee of the Congress, RJD and JD(U) since then.

King Mahendra is also the most travelled Indian parliamentarian, visiting a total of 211 countries. In a year, he travels 53 times to the United Kingdom and 10 times to the United States. (Source: Wikipedia, NDTV and agencies)
