New Delhi, Jan. 1 -- There descended an unusual calm upon the city instead of what would otherwise have been an evening replete with festive fervour to usher in the new year. As protests continued to gather momentum at Jantar Mantar, many nightclubs, hotels and government clubs called off their New Year festivities in the city and NCR. Popular haunts in the city such as Capitol at the Ashoka Hotel, Vasant Vihar Club and Delhi Gymkhana Club called off their celebrations.
"We have cancelled all our New Years celebrations in order to express solidarity with the victim who lost her life and the family," said a Delhi Gymkhana Club official.
Other popular clubs and restaurants in the city also called off their celebrations to mourn the victim's death.
All festivities organised by the defence forces too, came to a grinding halt. Army officials said that an advisory had been issued to all its formations.
The Indian Navy and the Air Force, too, instructed their formations to call off all celebrations following the death of the 23-year-old gangrape victim.
Celebrations were brought down several notches in the NCR too, as the Haryana Urban Development Authority called off a music programme organised at its Gymkhana Club for its members on Monday evening. HUDA also cleared its bars, refusing to entertain members asking for liquor.
The Noida Golf Club too cancelled all celebrations and closed the club for its members.
