Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 29 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said the Left government never had any plans to change the name of any place in the state and he has not received any letter from his Karnataka counterpart on change in names of some places in Kasaragod district bordering Karnataka from Kannada to Malayalam.

He said the whole controversy showshow a 'non-existent matter' can be made an issue.

'This shows how a non-existent matter can be made an issue. The state government has never even considered changing the name of any place in the state.I don't understand how such news came about. It seems like there is an attempt to create unnecessary issues in our state,' Vijayan told reporters here.

When asked whether Karnataka Chief MinisterB S Yediyurappahad written to him about the matter, Vijayan said he had not received any such letter.

State Revenue minister K Rajan and PWD minister P A Mohammed Riyas too denied the reports and said spreading such 'fake news' is a serious matter and must be looked into.

'The state government has not taken any decision like that. It is also not under the consideration of the state government.Such a move is currently not in our agenda,' Rajan said.

Riyas termed it as 'fake news.' 'Those who have given this news should look into the reason behind such fake news.I saw a message that this has become a talking matter in Karnataka state and that some people are trying to create a communal divide through this.

However, this is a serious issue and must be looked into,' Riyas said.

Earlier, BJP Kerala chief K Surendran had taken up the matter and claimed the 'move' (to change names) was to get into the good books of a few.

'The government, which has consistently denied the rights of linguistic minorities in Kasaragod district, is now determined to undermine their cultural heritage as well. What is happening now is not just a name change but a move to get into the good books of a few. This cannot be allowed,' Surendran posted on Facebook.

Minister for Local Self-government M V Govindan Master's office had also denied the reports and said the Kerala government has not taken any step to change the names of any place in Kasaragod district.

Manjeshwaram MLA and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) A K M Ashraf too said there was no move to change the names of the places.PTI RRT BN BALA BN BALA
