While growing up, your parents might have restricted you from doing many things after a meal like sleeping immediately or taking a bath right after you eat. Guess what, they were right. Lying down after a meal is a terrible idea and can affect your digestion. Many of your habits hinder with proper digestion of food and can be harmful for your overall health. Hitting the bed right after having a hearty meal will cause bloating, discomfort and heart burn. Your stomach will not be able to digest the food completely and you will end up having odd sleeping patterns.
2. Take a shower

3. Go for a smoke
Many people go for a smoke after the meal and it is actually among the most damaging habits. It is not only harmful for your lungs but also hinders with the proper digestion of food. Cigarette contains nicotine, which binds with the oxygen and allows the body to absorb more carcinogens than normal. Smoking immediately after having food also ups the risk of lung and bowel cancer.
4. Drink tea
Many people drink tea after a meal but it is a bad habit as it interferes with the absorption of iron. The tea contains tannic acid, which binds with iron and protein in the food and decreases their absorption by the body. Deficiency of iron can result in anemia, which causes weakness, extreme fatigue, chest pain, brittle nails, pale skin and poor appetite. 5. Eat fruits
Fruits are easiest to digest but if you eat them after or just before your meal, it will remain in your stomach for a longer period of time. This will cause burping, heartburn, indigestion and discomfort. The best time to have fruits is on an empty stomach or a couple of hours before a meal. The simple sugars will get broken down and completely absorbed by the body. Your body will also get all the fiber, nutrients and simple sugars from the fruits, if you eat them on an empty stomach.
