Uttar Pradesh’s Minister for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation Swami Prasad Maurya said on Saturday that Muslims use triple talaq to “change wives” and satisfy their "lust".
The BJP minister's comments come at a time when there is a raging debate over the issue of triple talaq. Maurya also said triple talaqs had no basis.
Maurya, who was in Basti to participate in a function at the house of a local BJP leader, said:
BJP stands with Muslim women who have been given talaq unreasonably and arbitrarily. These talaqs have no basis.... If someone only for satisfying his lust keeps changing his wives and forces his own wife and children on the streets to beg... no one will call this a right.
Maurya said the BJP stands with women who have been given triple talaq to help them get respect. He also took a jibe at BSP supremo Mayawati's poor show in the state Assembly elections, saying he has brought his former leader's politics to an end in the state.
Maurya, who had quit the BSP before the state Assembly elections to join the BJP, said she cannot be a member of the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha now.
Swami Prasad Maurya When I left the BSP, Mayawati had remarked that all those who leave the party are doomed but I had vowed that I will teach her how politics is done.
Maurya said he has fulfilled his pledge of bringing the politics of Mayawati to an "end in the state".
He rejected the BSP supremo's charges of tampering in EVM machines and said she is frustrated because of her party's dismal show in the recent elections and was making such unfounded statements.
Maurya was the leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly till June last year, when he resigned from all BSP posts alleging "a money for ticket" syndicate being run by the party.
