The Mumbai Police briefing has exposed a new racket that has been busted. The police revealed the Fake-TRP racket that also involves Republic TV.
TRPs, Television Rating Points, directly affect the advertising revenues of a channel which is estimated to be around 40-50 crores rupees. A slight change results in a massive amount estimating around 100s of crores of rupees.
The organisation responsible for measuring TRP is BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council), which installs barometers in various households across the nation. Approximately 30,000 barometers have been installed all over, out of which 2000 are expected to be present in Mumbai. The data for the installed barometers are supposed to be confidential.
The installation and maintenance of these barometers were handed over to a company named Hansa by BARC.
It was revealed during the investigation that some ex-employees of Hansa were providing data for these barometers to some channels which then paid the households to watch the channel the entire day and thus jack up their TRPs.
Republic TV is one of the channels accused in the racket and the police have stated that arrests are going to follow.
Republic TV has now threatened to sue the Mumbai Police Commissioner for defamation and the channel has denied all the charges levelled against them. The channel issued a statement and specifically mentioned that they will file a counter case against the Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.
