After the Mumbai mayor expressed reservations in moving to a newly-alloted bungalow at Byculla zoo, Shiv Sena and Congress also supported his stance and demanded that the mayor should be given a bungalow as per his stature.
The current residence of the mayor is at Dadar beach near Shivaji Park but the place will soon be taken over to make a memorial for Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.
A Congress leader has said the current residence of the mayor, which is a heritage building, should remain Mayor House while Bal Thackeray's memorial should be built at Matoshree.
"Matoshree is the place where Bal Thackeray worked most and breathed his last. Why can't they convert Matoshree as Bal Thackeray's memorial instead of sending Mayor to Zoo," said Raju Waghmare of Congress.
Shiv Sena corporator Ashish Chemburkar has also questioned the decision of changing the address of mayor's residence. "Mayor is the highest post in a civic body. How can BMC allot him bungalow in Byculla Zoo which falls under silence zone?," he asked.
He further added, "we demand civic body should allot him bungalow keeping his stature in mind".
The mayor in his letter to civic chief has asked for two adjacent bungalows in Malabar hill area of Mumbai. The mayor has expressed his concern over the area he has been allotted the new bungalow, stating that foreign delegates and other guests visit his residence quite often and he needs to arrange functions for them.
But now he won't be able to arrange these functions as the new bungalow at Byculla Zoo falls in silence zone.
