Mumbai: HC pulls up BMC after building collapse leaves 11 dead

The contractor and owner of the three-story residential building that collapsed on another structure in Mumbai's Malad West on Wednesday, killing at least 11 people, including eight minors, the youngest of whom was just one-and-a-half years old, were arrested and booked by the Mumbai Police on Friday, June 11. The building fall was brought to the attention of the Bombay High Court suo motu. The High Court, hearing the case on Friday, slammed the BMC and the state government, questioning why similar building collapses occur every year in Mumbai, killing innocent people. The BMC was also chastised by the court for 'allowing such illegal constructions' to be built throughout the city.
