11 Mar 2021: Mumbai: 68-year-old arrested for allegedly raping street dog

A 68-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday by the DN Nagar Police in Mumbai for allegedly raping a female dog living on the streets of Juhu galli in Andheri (West) last December.

Ahmad Shah, a vegetable vendor and a resident of Juhu galli, was held after an animal rights NGO's employee complained to the police.

Here are more details on this.

Details: Complaint filed by Vijay Mohnani

Vijay Mohnani, 45, from Bombay Animal Rights, submitted a video to the police in which Shah could be seen raping the dog, reports say.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Mohnani told the police, "I received a call from a resident of Juhu galli, who told me there is a man in their area who rapes street dogs (sic)."

Details: Shah's family beat up man who had shot the video

"I asked him why he did not complain to the police earlier...The man said he knew the accused and had warned him not to repeat the act, but the accused kept repeating it and hence, he informed me about it (sic)," Mohnani added in the complaint.

Mohnani also alleged that people from Shah's family had beaten up the person who shot the video.

Action: FIR registered under these sections

On March 9, an FIR was registered under Sections 377 (unnatural offenses) and 429 (killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 11 (treating animals cruelly) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

"The accused has been arrested and will be produced before a court," Bharat Gaikwad, Senior Inspector at the DN Nagar Police station, reportedly said.

Other details: This is the third such case in past six months

Meanwhile, Mohanani said that they will try to identify other dogs who may have been sexually assaulted by the accused.

"We will be trying to identify the dogs in the area who have been sexually assaulted and get them medical aid," he was quoted as saying.

In October last year, two people were arrested in separate cases for raping dogs in Mumbai.
