Two people have been arrested for questioning after a video clip of a young tribal woman being forced to carry her husband on her shoulders, as punishment meted out by villagers in MP’s Jhabua, went viral on social media, on Saturday, 13 April.
District Superintendent of Police Vineet Jain said the woman, in her twenties, was reportedly shamed by villagers of Devigarh, approximately 340 kilometres from MP’s capital of Bhopal.
The woman was forced to carry her husband, allegedly as punishment for having an affair with a another man. District Superintendent of Police Vineet Jain added, “The woman is married and has a child. She disappeared from the village for around 10 days. The villagers found her eventually with another man. So, they made her carry her husband on her shoulders and walk through the village.”
"A case has been registered against 13 people under the relevant sections of the IPC. We’ve arrested her husband, Shankar Rathore, and one other person so far. We’re still searching for the rest of the people seen on the video," he said.
Caste-Based Violence or Punishment For ‘Adultery’?
PTI quoted police sources as stating that the woman was apparently “punished” by people of Devigarh because she was having a relationship with another man.
However, ANI reported that the incident took place because the woman was having an affair with a man from another caste.
Police denied the allegations of the attack being caste-based. DSP Vineet Jain added that the people behind the incident as well as the woman were all adivasis.
