14 Feb 2021: Modi praises farmers in Tamil Nadu while launching infrastructure projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday applauded the farmers of Tamil Nadu for "record food grain production and good use of water resources."
The PM was addressing an event in the state capital Chennai where he launched several infrastructure projects.
During his address, Modi also remembered the martyrs of the Pulwama terror attack as Sunday marked the second anniversary of the incident.
Fact: 'Remember the mantra of 'per drop, more crop''
Modi said at the event, "I want to appreciate the farmers of Tamil Nadu for record food grain production and good use of water resources. We have to do whatever we can do to conserve water. Always remember the mantra of 'per drop, more crop.'"
Pulwama: 'No Indian can forget Pulwama attack'
Remembering the 2019 Pulwama attack, where over 40 CRPF jawans were martyred, PM Modi said that "no Indian can forget this day."
"Two years ago, the Pulwama attack happened. We pay homage to all the martyrs we lost in that attack. We are proud of our security forces. Their bravery will continue to inspire generations," the PM said.
Chennai Metro: Modi inaugurated Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I extension
Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated the Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I extension.
He said, "It will make everyone happy that we are launching a nine-km-long stretch of metro rail, which has been completed on schedule despite COVID-19 by Indian contractors."
"In this years' Budget, Rs. 63,000 crore has been set aside for Phase II of the project," he added.
Other projects: Modi laid foundation of IIT-Madras' Discovery Campus
Modi laid the foundation for IIT-Madras' Discovery Campus at Thaiyur. An amount of Rs. 1,000 crore has been earmarked for the project's first phase over an area of two lakh square meters and the extension, renovation, and modernization of the Grand Anicut Canal System.
He dedicated to India the Chennai Beach Athipattu fourth line and the Railway electrification of Villupuram Cuddalore-Mayiladuturai Thanjavur-Mayiladuturai-Tiruvarur Single-Line Sections.
Other remarks: Modi called Chennai 'city of knowledge, creativity'
Modi praised Chennai during his address, calling it a city of "knowledge and creativity."
"Chennai is full of energy and enthusiasm," he said, "From here, we begin key infrastructure projects."
Further, he called Tamil Nadu a leading automobile manufacturing hub of the country and said that the southern state is now evolving as the "tank manufacturing hub of India."
