Puducherry, July 21 (PTI): Puducherry Minister A K Sai J Saravanan Kumar presented a petition on Wednesday to Union Minister Piyush Goyal seeking to restore free supply of rice through ration shops instead of paying cash equivalent to the quantum of the commodity now in force here.

The petition was handed over by the Territorial Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister to the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in Delhi.

The free rice scheme faced several hurdles in the past with the then Territorial Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi objecting to supply of rice through ration shops.

She took the stand that only cash equivalent of the quantum of rice meant for cardholders should be paid through banks.

When the difference of opinion intensified between Bedi and the then Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, she sought the opinion of the Union Home Ministry which approved her stand.

A source close to Saravanan Kumar said he met a few other Ministers too in Delhi and brought to their notice various proposals awaiting clearance by the Centre. PTI COR NVG NVG
