Minerva and Chennayin may play AFC games in Ahmedabad
Last year's I-League champion Minerva Punjab and Indian Super League winners Chennaivin FC have turned to The Arena by TransStadia, a multi-facility stadium at the heart of Ahmedabad, Gujarat to host their upcoming AFC Champions League and AFC Cup ties, respectively.
TranStadia, opened in 2016 with over 20,000 seating capacity, is the home of Pro Kabaddi side Gujarat Fortune Giants and has also hosted the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.
The stadium boasts of a FIFA-approved football pitch and could well be the home of these Indian teams for their home fixtures in AFC matches.
Both teams play their opening games away from homewith Chandigarh-based Minerva playing their preliminary round against Iranian club Saipa FC on February 12 away while Chennaiyin will play either Transport United or Colombo SC on March 6. In Case of being knocked out, Minerva will get relegated to the AFC Cup.
"lt's true, we are in talks with TransStadia to host our AFC fixtures," a Minerva club official told Mail Today.
"There arent many stadiums that up to the standards that can host the AFC competitions and plenty of the stadiums are already hosting the ISL. We are still negotiating and are also looking for options but its likely we will play there. We also heard Chennaiyin are also in talks so let's see how it works."
