Mika Singh, detained in UAE, is now released, says Indian envoy in Abu Dhabi
Indian singer Mika Singh, who was detained early Thursday morning in UAE, has been released. He will be produced in court today.
Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri, told India Today that the singer was "released" last night.
"He was detained yesterday and brought to Abu Dhabi. We got to know about it around 5 pm on Thursday evening, but we sent a team and got in touch with him and the authorities. He was released from custody around 11.30 pm. He will be produced in a court today," Ambassador Suri said.
Mika Singh was detained in the wee hours (around 3 am) of Thursday in Dubai on the basis of a complaint filed by a Brazilian national (a teenager) of allegedly sending her inappropriate pictures.
He was detained in Dubai and then taken to Abu Dhabi where he was kept in the jail.
The Indian mission learnt of the matter around 5 pm and the ambassador sent a team to the police station.
"We sought consular access and eventually when he was released from custody, we met him," the Indian envoy told India Today over phone.
The Indian mission is keeping in touch with both sides.
Ambassador Suri emphasised that everything would be done within the realms of the laws of the land and the Indian mission would carry out its duties as it does for any Indian citizen.
He said, "The laws of the land should always prevail. It is a matter for the UAE authorities. Mika Singh has hired a lawyer and I'm sure he will be well represented. We would do the same what we do for any Indian citizen -- which is to ensure he is tried fairly."
