‘Mermaid Baby’ Born in Kolkata Hospital Dies in Four Hours, Doctors Unable to Identify Sex
In a rare case, a mermaid baby was born in a Kolkata hospital in West Bengal shocking doctors. While the upper half of the baby was normal, the lower half looked like that of a mermaid with fused legs. Dubbed as the mermaid baby, doctors could not identify the sex of the child due to the underdeveloped pelvis and fused legs. The rare condition is known as sirenomelia or ‘mermaid syndrome’. Muskura Bibi gave natural birth to the baby at the government-run Chittaranjan Deva Sadan Hospital in Kolkata on Kolkata. As the 23-year-old could not afford scans during the pregnancy and only knew about the baby’s condition after giving birth. The doctors could not save the baby which died four days after birth. Mermaid syndrome is believed to affect one in every 60,000 to 100,000 births.
Dr Sudip Saha, a child specialist at the hospital said due to financial constraints, the parents could not have proper medication or nutrition during the pregnancy. Improper blood circulation to the baby from the mother can lead to this kind of abnormality. Daily Mail quoted Dr Saha as saying, “I had never seen such a baby before. It is the first case of Sirenomelia in the state and second in the country.”

He also said, “The baby had normal formation in upper part of the body but below the waist, its legs were fused together. The lower part was not developed completely. We learnt the mother had not undergone ultrasound sonography throughout gestation.” In a similar incident in 2016, a woman from Uttar Pradesh gave birth to the country’s first known ‘mermaid baby’. It could only survive for 10 minutes.
