A photo of First Lady Melania Trump smiling next to former President Barack Obama at Barbara Bush’s funeral over the weekend has taken the internet by storm.
The image, captured by someone who attended the private service for the former first lady Saturday in Houston, showed Obama saying something to Trump and her flashing back a smile. Trump was representing the current White House at the ceremony with President Donald Trump opting not to attend.
“Find someone who smiles like Melania Trump does when she's talking to Obama & far away from Donald,” tweeted Adam Blickstein, who previously worked as a public affairs strategic planner for the Pentagon.
Some suggested the first lady responded with a more natural expression of joy than she has often shown beside her husband.
This is Melania and Obama sitting together today at former First Lady Barbara Bush's funeral. Have you ever, ever, EVER seen Melania smile like this, and look this relaxed, beside her own husband? Ever? pic.twitter.com/9qYLT2glIHApril 21, 2018
Others praised Obama for showing such pleasantness toward the wife of a man who has repeatedly attacked him in recent years.
As well as the former president and first lady, the service was attended by Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. President Trump, however, did not attend in order to “avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends,” according to a statement issued by the White House a few days before the funeral.
Melania Trump’s joyful reaction is not the first time she has hinted at a more favorable view of Barack Obama than her husband possessed. The former president is one of only five accounts she follows through her official @FLOTUS Twitter handle.
There has been much focus on the relationship between the Trumps following allegations that her husband had affairs with adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal. The allegations came to light following reports of payments made to the two women facilitated by the president's personal attorney Michael Cohen.
After the Daniels reports permeated the media, Melania Trump was suggested to have distanced herself from her husband, canceling some of her public appearances with him and arriving on her own to some of his events including the State of the Union address.
