‘Media Twisting My Comments on Manmohan Singh’: Sheila Dikshit

Former Delhi Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, on Thursday, 14 March, accused some media organisations of “twisting” her comments on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s handling of terror during his tenure.

In an interview to News18’s Vir Sanghvi, the Delhi Congress chief said, “Manmohan Singh was not as strong and determined as Modi perhaps but then there is also a feeling that he is doing it all for politics”. She was responding to a question on the criticism faced by the UPA government from some quarters during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

Some media organisations including The Indian Express, Republic TV, Firstpost and news agency ANI ran with a misleading headline omitting the second part of Dikshit’s comment criticising Modi for “doing it all for politics.” The headlines only emphasised what Dikshit said about Manmohan Singh’s tackling of terror.

BJP President Amit Shah also shared The Indian Express article and wrote on Twitter, “ Thank you @SheilaDikshit ji for reiterating what the nation already knows but the Congress party is never ready to admit.”

Clarifying on her comment, Dikshit tweeted, “I have seen some media is twisting my comments made in an interview. Here is what I said – it may seem to some people that Mr Modi is stronger on terror but I think this is a poll gimmick more than anything else. (sic)”

Vir Sanghvi, who did the interview, too, asserted that her comment was taken out of context. He wrote on Twitter, I did the interview in question. She is absolutely right. Let’s not take what she said out of context and twist it. You can see the whole interview on Virtuosity on @CNNnews18 this weekend.”

Sanghvi also put out the entire transcript of the portion of the interview which has come under question.
