Mbaye Niang on target as Rennes return to winning ways against Dijon

The Senegal international notched his eighth goal of the season to help the Red and Blacks secure their second win in five games

Mbaye Niang was on the scoresheet in Rennes’ 3-2 victory over Dijon in Friday’s French Ligue 1 game at the Stade Gaston Gerard.

The Senegal international took his tally to eight goals this season as the Red and Blacks returned to winning ways following their draw against Angers, loss to Nimes and last Sunday’s stalemate with Nice.

Rennes started the game on the back foot with Nayef Aguerd’s 20th-minute opener but in the 52nd minute, they levelled through Adrien Hunou.

Benjamin Jeannot restored the lead to Dijon three minutes later before Niang brought his side back to contention with his 61st-minute effort.

French man Wesley Said then scored the winning goal with seven minutes left to play to help Rennes bag their 11th win of the season.

Niang featured for the full duration of the match along with Mali international Hamari Traore.

With the victory, Rennes are 11th in the league standings after securing 43 points from 33 games.

Niang will hope to make Senegal’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad as they will hope to navigate their way past Group C rivals Tanzania, Algeria and Kenya to progress to the knock out stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, Traore’s Mali have been paired in Group E alongside Mauritanian, Tunisia and Angola.
