Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga to be sold by Toyota in India in future
In future we can see Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga being manufactured and sold by Toyota in India. The development will be part of collaborative efforts to be undertaken by Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation as per a memorandum of understanding towards business partnership concluded between the two Japanese auto giants in February 2017.
Although there is no clarity as to when Toyota-badged Ciaz and Ertiga will arrive in India, we know that Maruti Suzuki Baleno will arrive in the country with the new badge in the second half of 2019. Also, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will start the production of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza from 2022.
While Baleno, Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and Ertiga will come with Toyota tag in India, Suzuki will get two new electrified vehicles built on Toyota platform -- RAV4 and Corolla Wagon -- for the European market.
On March 20, Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation had announced that they would begin considering concrete collaboration in new fields. Apart from the two companies getting each other's vehicles for Indian, African and European markets, Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation will also collaborate in production and widespread popularization of electrified vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz challenges the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento. Currently, Ciaz is available in two engine options -- a 1.5-litre K15 petrol motor and a 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel powertrain. Both are smart hybrids. The former is good for 103 bhp of power and 138 Nm of torque, while the latter churns out 89 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The petrol variant comes with an automatic transmission as well.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga competes against the likes of Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Innova Crysta and Renault Lodgy, and is available in two engine options -- a K15 petrol motor with progressive smart hybrid technology and a DDiS diesel engine with smart hybrid technology. The 1.5-litre petrol motor delivers 103 bhp of power and 138 Nm of torque, while the 1.3-litre diesel motor produces 89 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. The petrol and diesel engines of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga are mated to a five speed manual gearbox, with the former having an option for an automatic transmission as well.
