A man who sexually abused his daughter for years has been sentenced to 29 years in jail. The assault started when she was just five, and Channel NewsAsia said the father eventually took his child’s virginity when she was about 11.

According to The Straits Times, the sex was unprotected, and the abuse happened at least once a month until she was 16 and realized her father’s actions were wrong. Or, in the High Court judge’s words, “clearly and totally reprehensible.”

Now 51, the man was slapped with a jail sentence yesterday after he pleaded guilty to two charges of statutory rape and one charge of aggravated sexual assault by penetration. Six other charges of sexual offences were considered during sentencing, and his jail term included one year in lieu of the maximum 24 strokes of the cane that he would’ve received if he were younger than 50.

The man cannot be named to protect the identity of his now 18-year-old daughter.

Back in 2006, the abuse began when the man lived with his wife, his daughter, and his son in a flat. What started with touching her inappropriately soon progressed to more explicit sex acts to satisfy his fantasies, as he performed oral sex on her in 2009 and sexually violated her in a guest bedroom during a Christmas sleepover at his sister’s flat in December 2011, the court heard.

Her abuse continued in secondary school, and it was only in 2017 that she shared what was happening to her with a friend, and subsequently her mother, even though she was worried the truth would rip her family apart. The daughter was then moved to a relative’s house before her mother reported the case to the police on June 7 in 2017, TODAY said. He was arrested the following day.

The last time the man had sex with his daughter was in January 2016.

In court, the prosecutors called the case “appalling” and asked for a “substantially heavy punishment,” adding that “this was conduct of a high level of perversion and gravity. The strongest measure of deterrence, both general and specific, is clearly required here.”

“Children such as the victim need, and deserve, the fullest protection of the law,” the prosecution said. “The fact that it was her own father who committed these acts would undoubtedly leave a painful, indelible mark on the victim.”

A 30-year jail term and an additional year in lieu of caning was sought after by the prosecution, while the man’s lawyer asked for 23 years instead, claiming his client was remorseful and had turned to religion and attended courses on anger management and mindfulness in prison.

The lawyer said that the man, who was also a victim of childhood abuse, understood his family had disowned him, but still hoped to reconnect with them after he got out of jail.

For each charge of statutory rape, he could have been jailed up to 20 years and fined, or caned.
