Major Nikhil Handa was 'obsessed' with Shailaja, wanted to marry her: Delhi Police
Major Nikhil Handa wanted to marry Shailaja and murdered her after she refused, the Delhi Police revealed today.
In a press conference, the police told that Nikhil Handa was absconding since the murder. His call records showed that he had called Shailaja many times, but when they tried looking for him he was absconding, the police said.
"He knew her since 2015. He was obsessed with her and wanted to marry her," a senior police officer said.
Shailaja Dwivedi had left home on Saturday morning for a physiotherapy session. An official vehicle assigned to Shailaja's husband Amit Dwivedi had dropped her outside the army hospital. When the car went to pick her up the driver was told that Shailaja hadn't turned up for the session.
According to the police, Nikhil called Shailaja on the morning of the murder.
Nikhil, who was posted Nagaland's Dimapur, had gotten himself and his son admitted to the army hospital in Delhi cantonment so that he could meet Shailaja.
After Nikhil killed Shailaja, he returned to the hospital to review the situation after which he went absconding.
The police also revealed that Major Amit Dwivedi had caught Nikhil and Shailaja talking to each other on a video call and did not want them to have any contact.
Shailaja was found dead on Saturday afternoon with her throat slit and body run over. Passersby informed the police about an unidentified woman's body lying on the road. After the police reached the crime scene, they found that the 30-year-old woman's throat was slit by a sharp-edged weapon.
The Delhi Police arrested Major Nikhil Handa on Sunday after the suspected vehicle was spotted in Meerut.
