Maguire can be Manchester United's Van Dijk, says Evans

The forward believes the prices now paid for players in the transfer market are astronomical

Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has backed his old Leicester City team-mate Harry Maguire to be a success at Old Trafford after his record-breaking transfer.

The centre-back left the King Power Stadium after two years to join the Red Devils in an £80 million ($96m) move this summer, seeing him replace Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as the world's most expensive defender.

United bought Maguire to strengthen their back line in the wake of a disappointing last season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping he can have a similar impact as Champions League winner and PFA Player of the Year Van Dijk.

The 26-year-old England international made a positive impression on his United debut as his team opened their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over Chelsea.

New team-mate Paul Pogba has already labelled him “the beast” and says he is “a leader” in the wake of his first game.

But Evans, who played with Maguire at Leicester last season, is not surprised by his solid start, as he believes he can be as big a success at United as Van Dijk is at Anfield.

"Both are great on the ball, and Harry has got explosive pace people don't see. He is powerful and good in the air," he told Sky Sports.

"Everyone will compare the transfer fees but it's so difficult to judge transfer fees nowadays. We are all human and it is weird we get traded for money.

"In the transfer market it's all supply and demand and things can go up and down at any moment. The most important thing is for him to be judged on how he plays.

"I don't have any worries about him there. He is tailor-made for Manchester United, it was a great move for him.

"He's a player they needed. He's got a really likeable nature about him. He will be a real hit there, he is a fantastic player."

United are in action again next Monday when they visit Wolves for their second Premier League clash of the season.
