Madhesi-led protest cripples normal life in Nepal

Madhesis led a nationwide strike in Nepal to protest the killing of four cadres in police firing in Saptarai district recently. Though the impact of the strike by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) had been minimal in the Kathmandu Valley, educational institutions remained shut. However, Birgunj saw the maximum outrage as the protesters came on roads in large numbers. The protesters staged demonstrations by burning tyres and a torch rally shouting slogans against the government. A large number of security personnel were also deployed to prevent any untoward incidents in the region. Protestors were angry as they called the killing of their cadres a deliberate attempt by the government.
