The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest from Varanasi and Amit Shah will fight from Gandhinagar. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will contest from Lucknow and Nitin Gadkari will fight from Nagpur.

Minister VK Singh has been fielded from Ghaziabad. Hema Malini is BJP candidate from Mathura. Sakshi Maharaj will fight from Unnao. Newly-inducted BJP Vice-President Jay Panda will contest from Kendrapara and Aprajita Sarangi will fight from Bhuvneshwar, Odisha.

In Maharashtra, MoS Defence Subhash Bhamre will contest from Dhule, Hansraj Ahir from Chandrapur and Poonam Mahajan from Mumbai North Central. Union Minister Smriti Irani will take on Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Amethi.

Minister and Senior BJP leader Jagat Prakash Nadda released the list for 182 candidates. Union minister Kiren Rijiju will fight from Arunachal East and Jitendra Singh from Udhampur.

In 2014, Prime Minister Modi had contested from two seats Varanasi and Vadodara. He won both the seats. However, he vacated Vadodara and retained Varanasi.

Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj had already said that she won’t contest polls this time. However, she was asked by the senior party leadership to reconsider her decision.

Earlier today, Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP from Deoria Kalraj Mishra said that he will not contest elections this time. “I have been given a lot of other responsibilities by the party so my time will be devoted to that,” he said.

The list comes after a series of meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Chief Amit Shah, Senior party leaders and Union Ministers including Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh were among those present in the meeting in New Delhi.

Several opposition parties including Congress have already released their lists. Congress President Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi and chairperson Sonia Gandhi will fight from Raebareli.

Earlier in the day, the BJP released its list of 18 candidates for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly elections.

The BJP announced candidates from several states such as Uttar Prdesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. The pasrty has also finalised names of all 17 party candidates from Bihar and sent the list to the state unit which will announce it jointly with other allies.

The polling will begin on April 11 and continue till May 19. The results will be declared on May 23. The polling will be held on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19 for 543 Lok Sabha seats.
