Three militants were today killed in an encounter with the security forces in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, police said.
A policeman was also injured in the gunfight that began this morning.
"Three militants have been killed in the encounter," a police official said, adding the three bodies have been recovered from the encounter site.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Kalaroos village of the district this morning following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area, the official said.
He said as the forces were conducting the operation, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering an encounter in which three militants were killed.
"The identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained," he said.
During the initial gunfight, a policeman was injured, the official said, adding the injured cop has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two militants were gunned down by security forces, while a police constable was injured in the gunfight between holed up militants and security forces in Kupwara's Kalaroos area.
An encounter between security forces and the militants is underway and all exits have been sealed, police said.
Police said that a cordon and search operation was launched after they received information on the presence of some militants in Kalaroos area. Two to three militants are believed to be in hiding in the area.
