Biren Singh-Led BJP Wins Manipur State Assembly Floor Test

The BJP won the floor test in Manipur state assembly with the support of 32 MLAs. After the victory, CM Biren Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP, which was at second spot in the state, winning 21 seats to the Congress party's 28, did not waste time in getting four MLAs each of the National People's Party and the Naga People's Front (NPF), which is also one of NDA's alliance partners at the Centre, to its side, plus three other lawmakers.

Opposition Congress on Monday pressed for expeditiously taking up of its substantive motion on the conduct of the Governors of Goa and Manipur in not calling the single largest party to form government after the assembly elections.

Raising the issue, Digvijaya Singh (Cong) said he has moved a substantive motion under rule 168 on the conduct of Governors and wanted to know when it will be taken up.

Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said the notice has been received and it is under consideration. "As and when Chairman decides on the admissibility, you will be intimated," he said.

Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad however said the phrase "murder of democracy" should not go on record, a plea which was vehemently opposed by the Congress and other opposition parties including Left.

"Murder of democracy is not an unparliamentary phrase and it cannot be expunged," said Tapan Sen (CPI-M).

The Biren Singh-led BJP government and the Congress will battle to prove majority in a floor test which is to be held on Monday.

Biren Singh assured Manipur Governor Najma Heptullah that he had the support of 32 MLAs, while the Congress made the same claim.

The BJP legislators are believed to have been lodged in a hotel in Guwahati, The Indian Express reported.

Alleging that the BJP is indulging in horse-trading in Manipur, Congress MP Ripun Bora on Tuesday asserted that the party is “murdering democracy all over the country.”

“We got information that the BJP hijacked 5-6 Cong MLAs and took them to Guwahati. This is horse-trading,” Bora said.

The economic blockade in Manipur was lifted on Sunday night after successful talks among the Centre, the state government and the Naga groups.

The blockade was imposed by the United Naga Council on 1 November to protest against the creation of seven new districts by the erstwhile Okram Ibobi Singh-led Congress government in the state.
