Rising Pune Supergiant will look to continue their winning momentum when they take on Kings XI Punjab on Saturday, in the first match of the double header in Indore.
Riding on captain Steve Smith’s unbeaten 54-ball 84, Pune clinched a thrilling seven-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in their first match of IPL 2017.
Hopes are high this time around from the Pune franchise after finishing way below in the points table. The start has been strong with Imran Tahir proving his worth by claiming three wickets.
Tahir along with legspinner Adam Zampa covered up for the lapses made by the seamers – Deepak Chahar, Ashok Dinda and Ben Stokes. However, Pune would like Stokes to step up the plate after the franchise bagged him for a big price at the players’ auction. (IPL 2017: Full coverage)
The middle order looks formidable in the presence of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a 34-ball 64 in the first game, followed by Stokes, Smith and Dhoni down the order.
Meanwhile, Punjab would like to forget their last year’s performance and look to start afresh under a new captain in Glenn Maxwell and new coaching staff.
The Punjab outfit doesn’t boast of big names, except for Maxwell, Miller and Darren Sammy but have the potential to go deep in the tournament. The batting will revolve around Maxwell, Miller and India wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who had an impressive home season.
However, the bowling is a bit of concern with Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma, Varun Aaron, Anureet Singh, Matt Henry and rookie T Natarajan. Apart from Natarajan, the rest have experience of playing in the IPL in previous seasons.
