Kingpin of ‘Gauraiya’ gang arrested in Delhi; ammunition recovered

New Delhi, Apr 6 (PTI) A 26-year-old kingpin of Gauraiya gang was arrested along with his associate for allegedly being involved in extortion and robbery incidents, police said on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Pravesh alias Goriya, a resident of Kanjhawala, and Naveen (30), a resident of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, they said.

Police said Pravesh tried to escape from custody and fired at them, but he was overpowered by the security personnel.

The gang used to target shops in Bawana and Rohini area in north west Delhi for extortion and robbery, police said.

Police received a complaint regarding extortion of Rs 5 lakh and registered a case at the Prashant Vihar Police Station, they said.

“On Monday, police arrested Pravesh. During interrogation, he disclosed that he along with his associates Naveen and Akash, had made the extortion call to the complainant. Naveen was later apprehended,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Pranav Tayal said.

The accused disclosed that the gang was also involved in looting the complainant at Bawana, he said. A countrymade pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from Pravesh’s rented room in Karala village, police added.
