Kerala Love Jihad Case: Hadiya Files Fresh Petition, Says She Wants to Live as Muslim With Husband Shafin Jahan
New Delhi, Feb 20: Hadiya, a Hindu woman from Kerala who converted to Islam, on Tuesday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying that she wants to live her as a Muslim. Hadiya also sought permission to live with her husband Shafin Jahan. Hadiya was known as Akhila Ashokan before she converted.
“I embraced the faith/religion of Islam on my choice as per my conscience and on my own free will after studying about Islam and thereafter I married a person, namely Shafin Jahan, the Petitioner herein, from the same faith as per my choice and on my own free will,” Hadiya reiterated in her petition. The apex court freed her from her father’s custody and ordered her institution to allow her to continue her education in November last year.
In her prayer, Hadiya asked the Supreme Court to appoint Jahan as her guardian and claimed that her father, K M Asokan was under the influence of certain sections of people who are trying to use him. “Otherwise, I do not see how my father, who is an atheist, would object to me changing my religion or marrying someone from a different religion,” she argued.
She further accused the National Investigative Agency (NIA) of spreading false propaganda about her mental condition and alleged links with terrorist organisation Islamic State or IS. “The baseless and malicious propaganda being made by the investigating agency and by the evil forces behind my father that I am mentally not sound, that I have connection with IS and the media trial on these allegations would detrimentally affect my future and career as a Doctor, causing irreparable heavy injuries and loss to me,” she said.
Last month, the Supreme Court permitted the NIA to continue its probe into any criminality in the marriage of Hadiya. Born Akhila, the girl converted to Islam and married Jahan while still studying. Her father had opposed her marriage and the NIA is probing the case of ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala.
Suspecting his daughter to be a victim of ‘love jihad’, her father approached the High Court seeking nullification of the marriage, which the court conceded. However, her husband approached the Supreme Court against the High Court order. The apex court is yet to hear the case fully.
