The local body bye-elections held in 14 districts of Kerala for a total of 39 seats saw the Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerge victorious, winning a total of 21 seats. Meanwhile, the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured 12 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured two seats, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) secured two seats and two more seats were secured by independent candidates.
This victory for the LDF comes at a time when BJP and Congress groups are protesting against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government for their stand in the Sabarimala issue.
Prior to the elections, there was a lot of buzz regarding the bye-elections to the two wards in Pathanamthitta district, which is where the Sabarimala temple is located. The BJP was at the forefront of numerous protest marches in Pathanamthitta regarding the Sabarimala issue.
Putting all speculations of a BJP victory to rest, the two seats in Pathanamthitta was secured by an independent candidate and an SDPI candidate.
In Thiruvananthapuram, the elections were held in a total of three wards; UDF managed to win two of them while the LDF secured one seat.
The LDF emerged victorious in all the five seats for which the elections were held in Ernakulam. Among them, three seats were previously held by UDF candidates.
In Kannur, both the LDF and UDF retained their seats. The elections which were held at four wards saw both the LDF and UDF securing two seats each. The LDF won in all the seats to which elections were held in the districts of Thrissur and Kasargod.
The two seats which were secured by the BJP were the two wards in Alappuzha. In the remaining three wards in which the elections were held in Alappuzha, two were secured by the UDF and the LDF secured one seat.
In the election held for a single ward in Kollam, the UDF managed to secure that seat, which was previously held by the LDF.
In Kottayam, Kerala Congress, which had separated from the UDF, secured the single seat for which the elections were held.
