Kerala: Government issues high alert over bird flu outbreak declaring it a state-specific disaster

The Kerala state government declared the bird flu outbreak as a state-specific disaster issuing a high alert after the virus was found in some parts of Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. The virus was reported from four panchayats- Nedumudi, Thakazhy, Pallippad, and Karuvatta, in the Kuttanad region of the Alappuzha district, and from a duck farm in Neendoor panchayat in Kottayam district. Officials reported that a total of 1,700 ducks died in the farm situated in Kottayam district adding that nearly 40,000 birds, including 34,000 in the Kuttanad region would be culled to check the spread of the virus. To contain the outbreak, officials ordered the culling of ducks, hens, and other affected birds in a one-kilometer radius of the affected areas. Watch!
