In one of the biggest search and cordon operations carried out in south Kashmir, at least 3000 security forces swooped down on 12 villages of Shopian known as "hub of militancy". The operation was launched after security forces got intelligence about the presence of group of militants in the vicinity.
Top sources in the Army said there are inputs with "agencies" that new viral videos which show militants teaching weapon training to its cadre may have been extensively shot in Shopian and Pulwama in south Kashmir.
In one of the terror videos, at least 20 terrorist are carrying out what seems to be a patrolling in the forest area. In another video, a mujahid shows a dozen terror recruits how to use weapons like Ak 47. While there is a concern about how social media ban has proved to be ineffective, the new videos doing the round on social media aim to teach misguided youth weapons training.
Sources also say video coincide with the fact that there has been no exfiltration in the past year, with local terrorist no longer heading to training camps in PoK. The worry is that recent loot of weapons and banks is giving rise to suspicion of preparation for impending terror strike.
Army sources confirmed to Mail Today that though the operation drew a blank, and was called off, sources said security forces synergised with 4 battalions of Army, 8 companies of CRPF, 5 platoons of Jammu and Kashmir police and 30 Mahila Police constables.
In total, 12 villages were cordoned off, 28 locations were searched where security forces faced minor stone pelting in Turkwangam and Sugan.
South Kashmir has witnessed spate of terror related incidents, eventually leading to cancellation of Anantnag bypolls. Another source said that more such joint operation would be launched in near future.
The operation took place even as MHA Special Secretary Internal Security Reena Mitra convened a high level meet with senior officers of MHA and DG of JK SP Vaid.
