Karnataka Government Discontinues Pillion Seats For Two Wheelers With Less Than 100 CC Engines

Transport Commissioner B Dayananda said the notification will be effective for new vehicles and the government does not intend to apply the rules on old registered vehicles. He added the government is contemplating to amend rules to allow new motorcycles with engines below 100 cc.

Bengaluru, October 22: The Karnataka government has decided to bar pillion riders in two-wheelers that are equipped with an engine below 100 CC. The government also issued a notification on October 16 with immediate effect. The notification stated, “No pillion seat shall be attached to motorcycle with less than 100 cc engine”.

Transport Commissioner B Dayananda said the notification will be effective for new vehicles and the government does not intend to apply the rules on old registered vehicles. He added the government is contemplating to amend rules to allow new motorcycles with engines below 100 cc. Many vehicle owners had expressed their concerns on the legislation.

“We have to follow the recent high court order based on Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules which does not allow pillion riding on two-wheelers less than 100cc. The ban will be applicable for new vehicles and will not have any impact on existing two-wheelers”, The Times of India quoted Dayanand as saying.
