Karnataka gets its 1st intestinal transplant surgery

An ailing worker in his mid-forties got his intestine transplanted, becoming the first person across the state to be operated on with such a surgery. Venkatesh, a factory worker, came to the Bengaluru-based Apollo Hospital with just 10-centimetres of his intestine remaining. Diagnosed with acute mesenteric ischemia, he got a donor after thriving on Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for months. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a medical condition in which the cells of intestine die due to shortage of oxygen.
