School students in Jharkhand can look forward to displaying their skills in the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) karate event.
With karate finding a place in the SGFI events calendar, the Jharkhand State Karate-Do Association (JSKA) will shortly start the spadework to stitch a state strong unit together for the Games to be held in Indore in the end of October.
"Now school students have an opportunity to come up with their best shot at the Games. We are very happy with the development," said JSKA general secretary L. Nageshwar Rao.
Rao said they would shortly approach schools across Jharkhand with a request to provide list of karatekas in their respective institutions. "We are also in touch with the All India Karate Federation (AIKF) for necessary guidance. It is essential to seek help from the national federation since karate has been included in the SGFI calendar for the first time," he added.
According to him, the state body will pick a strong boys' and girls' outfit for the school games. "We'll conduct selection trials after getting the list of karatekas from school. The trials will be open. Since Jharkhand boasts of good young karatekas, picking a strong unit will not be a problem for us," Jamshedpur-based Rao, coach of the national karate team, added.
"I am happy that karate has been included in the SGFI calendar. I'll get an opportunity to represent Jharkhand there," a budding karateka, who trains under Rao, said.
