Kamala Mills Fire: Bonobo, Tap Restobar Licences Suspended, More to be Shut Down

The restaurants that BMC would be shutting down in next few days include The Junkyard Cafe on Pali Hill, U-turn Lounge and Sports Bar on Hill Road and Casa Vito Bar and Cafe in KFC lane.

Kamala Mills Fire: The licenses of popular restobars Bonobo and Tap on Linking Road in Bandra have been suspended by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following the fire at Kamala Mills compound, which killed 14 and injured many. More restaurants are expected to be shut down in next few days.

After the crackdown on the restaurants and bars operating without a license or permission, BMC has had sealed many restaurants and demolished illegal ones in the Kamala Mills area. The crackdown has been ordered by Sharad Ughade, assistant municipal commissioner, and Dr Sudhir Salunke, medical officer of health, H (West) ward.

About shutting down Bonobo, a rooftop bar at Kenilworth Mall, and Tap, a restobar at Global Fusion restaurant, Salunke said, “They only had eating house licences to run their restaurants. But they were illegally using the terrace portion without a rooftop licence to serve food, liquor and even had a bar counter.”

“We have served infringement of licence condition notice to Global Fusion and have already sealed the terrace. We will suspend their licence in two days. Bonobo’s licence has already been suspended,” he further added.

The restaurants that BMC would be shutting down in next few days include The Junkyard Cafe on Pali Hill, U-turn Lounge and Sports Bar on Hill Road and Casa Vito Bar and Cafe in KFC lane. Lately, the municipality 300 unauthorised restaurants across the city.

Earlier in the day, the Mumbai Police arrested Abhijeet Mankar, owner of ‘1 Above’ pub, in connection with the December 29 Kamala Mills fire. Since the day of the incident, Mankar was on the run along with two other owners – Kripesh Sanghvi and Jigar Sanghvi. Mankar was arrested from the Andheri area a day after Jigar and Kripesh Sanghvi were arrested from Andheri.

“Our team arrested owner of the 1 Above pub, Abhijeet Mankar, from Marine Lines in the early hours,” Ahmed Pathan, Senior Police Inspector, NM Joshi Marg Police Station was quoted as saying by PTI.
