Kakinada Becomes the 150th Railway Station in India to Receive Free, High-Speed Wi-Fi

In January 2016, Mumbai Central station became the first railway station in India to have free Wi-Fi facility followed by all busy stations of India.

New Delhi, August 16: Indian Railways has left no stone unturned in equipping railway stations with free Wi-Fi services across the country. As per a recent tweet by Google India, Kakinada becomes the 150th station in India to receive free, high-speed WiFi. Kakinada is a city and the district headquarters of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. The move to make free and high-speed Wi-Fi available at railway stations started on September 12 in 2015 when Indian Railways announced its partnership with the tech giant Google to provide free Wi-Fi services to 400 railway stations across the country. This project was launched in association with Railtel Corporation, a Public sector undertaking (PSU) owned by the Indian Railways that provides Internet services as RailWire and telecom infrastructure

The project was announced in September 2015 by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the company in Mountain View, California. Indian Railways aims to provide high-speed internet at over 400 stations in India by 2019 and is working with great determination to achieve this goal. In January 2016, Mumbai Central station became the first railway station in India to have free Wi-Fi facility followed by all busy stations like Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Howrah, Kanpur, Mathura, Aligarh, Barelli and Varanasi stations.

Under the Wi-Fi project, over 10 million Indians will be able to get an access to free Internet across railway stations. The target for the initial phase of the project was to cover 100 stations by the end of 2016 which, the Indian Railways successfully did.  The project employs Google’s Fiber technology under which the company provides internet services up to a speed of 1 Gigabits per second. Apart from Wi-Fi services at railway stations, the Indian Railways is also providing Wi-Fi connectivity in moving trains for selected routes using satellite communication technology. According to Indian Railways, over 10 million people who pass through these stations every day now have an access to fast Internet speed to stream, research their destination or download a new book or game for the journey ahead.
