Jharkhand Organises Kissing Competition; 18 Couples Lock Lips in Front of Thousands of Onlookers

The kissing competition was a part of the Dumaria Mela held in Littipara block in Pakur district of Jharkhand

In India, couples indulging in PDA (public display of affection) is often criticized or looked down upon. And kissing in public is a strict-no-no for many. However, for possibly the first time ever, a kissing competition for couples was organised in Jharkhand, all in an effort to celebrate love and romance between married couples. Over 18-tribal couples locked their lips in public at a fair organised for members of a tribal community in Pakur district in Jharkhand. The competition was held in presence of legislator Simon Marandi.

Reportedly, the kissing competition was a part of the Dumaria Mela held in Littipara block in Pakur district of Jharkhand. At the competition, around 18 tribal couples locked their lips in the presence of thousands of people in Dumaria village, which is around 321 km from state capital Ranchi. According to an article in Hindustan Times, Simon Marandi said it was an initiative to check growing cases of divorces and differences between couples in the tribal community here. Marandi is a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislator who organised the competition.

Explaining the need for the never-seen-before competition, Marandi said that Tribals are basically innocent and illiterate, due to which, the family system is weakening. “To make them aware of our social structure and responsibility towards the family, the idea of a kissing competition was conceived,” said Marandi. He also said that a competition of this kind would help in strengthening the relationship between the husband and wife in the tribal community.

The annual Dumaria Mela has been held for the past 37 years and includes events such as tribal dance, archery and running competitions to entertain villagers. The kissing competition has been added to the list for the first time.
