Jason Pierre-Paul is fortunate to still have his right hand, much less an ongoing football career.

The former New York Giants defensive end infamously mangled his hand in a fireworks accident on July 4, 2015. The incident left him hospitalized for several days and led to the amputation of his right index finger.

July 4 fireworks accident almost cost JPP his career

The injury cost him half of the 2015 season, but Pierre-Paul, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recovered to remain a productive player, logging 15.5 sacks in 28 games over the last two seasons.

On Tuesday, he reminded July 4 revelers to stay safe and posted a picture of his post-explosion injury on Instagram as a cautionary tale.

JPP’s fireworks photo is grotesque

While we support Pierre-Paul’s message of fireworks safety, the photo is gruesome, so we’re giving you the option of clicking here to see the image.

Here’s the message Pierre-Paul shared with the image.

It’s been 3yrs since my accident and I can truly say I’m very blessed and fortunate to be where I am in life. Looking at these pictures seems unreal and crazy. How your life can change in the blink of an eye. One of the greatest American traditions in celebrating 4th of July is with fireworks. Unfortunately, tomorrow someone will be injured playing with fireworks. We are celebrating the birthday of our great nation. I’m glad to still be alive to show you the outcome of what happened to me. Please don’t feel sorry for me, trust me your boy fine even with missing fingers lol. Be safe out there otherwise, this can be you.

Be safe and smart tonight, people.
