Gani Khawaja, the leader of the terrorist group Al-Badr, was killed in an encounter on Tuesday evening at Tujjar Shareef in Sopore, north Kashmir's Baramulla district, according to IGP-Kashmir Range Vijay Kumar. According to police reports, the encounter site yielded incriminating items such as weapons and ammunition. A rescue operation is currently underway.
Khawaja, a resident of the Kralgund region of Kupwara district, was one of Kashmir Valley's "most wanted" terrorists. He used to be a member of Hizbul Mujahedeen. According to police reports, Khawaja was involved in a number of terror crimes, including attacks on security forces and atrocities against civilians, as well as being the primary recruiter of youths into terrorist organizations. In North Kashmir, dozens of cases have been filed against him.
