Jailbreak aide held in Tamar

Ranchi, Oct. 25: A Maoist sympathiser, who provided logistics support to last year's infamous jailbreak in Seraikela and was scheming a rerun at Khunti divisional prison, was arrested during a forest combing operation in Tamar, on the outskirts of the capital, yesterday.

A 9mm pistol, two live cartridges, a stolen motorbike and a mobile phone have been found on Raman Pratap Bagti.

SSP Saket Kumar Singh today said the 25-year-old criminal, who helped rebels for money, was in Tamar on multiple missions.

First, he was trying to orchestrate a blast somewhere between Rajkiya Madhya Vidyalaya and the MR Alloy plant in Chowka police station area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district to disrupt a power supply line.

"Bagti wanted to terrorise the owner of MR Alloy, Ranjit Kumar Sinha, into paying him Rs 5 lakh. His plan was to snap power supply to Sinha's factory and then make an extortion call," the SSP said.

Second, Bagti wanted to release a prisoner from Khunti Divisional Jail using the same modus operandi as the August 17, 2011, breakout in Seraikela, where he was instrumental in the release of Maoist leaders Balaram Sahu, alias David, and Somra Hansda, besides four criminals.

The six had taken full advantage of a frail security system at the Seraikela jail and trained a pistol on the assistant jailer, later found to be an accomplice, to make good their escape.

Police sources said David and Bagti were lodged in the same jail for a certain period of time last year, and the Maoist had used his connections to help the criminal get bail. Once outside, Bagti worked on David's instructions. He was the one who arranged for money and a vehicle for the great escape.

A fortnight after the breakout, a special police task force had seized the escape car, an MUV, and arrested its driver Mohammed Ajju and another aide, Mohammed Ismail, from the same Tamar area. Mastermind David landed in police net in Jamui, Bihar, on January 3.

Apart from the blast and Khunti jailbreak, Singh said Bagti was also planning to abduct the block development officer of Ichagarh for ransom.

"Also, eight other cases against him ' mostly of loot ' have come to the fore. He is a hardcore criminal who helped Maoists for money," the SSP added.
