A soldier was killed as Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, on Monday.
Identifying the deceased as Rifleman Mohammad Arif Shafi Alam Khan Pathan, sources said he was deployed in Keri Battal area of Akhnoor. He was critically injured in the firing and was evacuated to Army hospital where he succumbed to injuries, they added.
Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked ceasefire violations with small arms fire and mortar shelling during the early hours of Monday. The Indian army retailed, said officials. The violation lasted for an hour.
A defence ministry spokesperson Lt Colonel Devender Anand said our troops responded strongly and inflicted heavy damage to Pakistani army posts and casualties to Pakistani soldiers. Details of damage is yet to be ascertained.
He added that Arif belonged to village Nawayard in Gujarat s Fatehganj tehsil of Vadodara district. He is survived by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

We first received a call that he was shot at and half an hour later, we were informed about his death. We have been told that his mortal remains will reach us tomorrow (Tuesday), Arif s elder brother, Ashraf Pathan said.
